Chernobyl disaster

A CNN news item right after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. With the Soviet Union initially denying any accident (and sacrificing hundreds of workers as liquidators) the full extent of the accident came to light when wind and rain brought heavy levels of radiation to northern and western Europe.

Ultimately, the accident spun up lots of protests against nuclear power usage and in favor of renewable energies in Europe.
